La rebelión de los cipayos marca un hito en los levantamientos de la India británica, si bien tiene relación causal con otros, es innegable su importancia por sí misma. Sus causas fueron variadas, entre ellas la pauperización de la población campesina y artesana, la limitación de ciertos sectores para participar en su propio gobierno y, por supuesto, el descontento de los cipayos ante las políticas de la Compañía Británica de las Indias Orientales. A pesar de que no tuvo objetivos unificados en términos generales, los diversos grupos de la sociedad india coincidían en la expulsión de los británicos de su territorio.

The rebellion of the sepoys marks a milestone in the uprisings of British India, although it has causal relationship with others, its importance by itself is undeniable. Its causes were varied, among them the pauperization of the peasant and artisan population, the limitation of certain sectors to participate in their own government and, of course, the dissatisfaction of the sepoys with the policies of the British East India Company. Although it had no unified goals in general terms, the various groups of Indian society agreed on the expulsion of the British from their territory.
